Snow Days: Round Two!

Last week we had two more snow days. On the first one CW had a fever virus, so we didn't get to go outside. The next day Rodney had to go on into work so it was up to Mommy to make the sledding happen. Luckily we have a good hill just down the road, but poor Sawyer was not into it. He went down with me once and liked it, but the second time - no way. Carter Wayne loved it of course. But it was so cold that he let me know when he wanted to go in. Sawyer cried the whole way home, and while I took his snow stuff off, and while I got him a drink. He was so mad! He laid on the couch for 20 minutes screaming in the fetal position. Bless his heart! All my snow days end up with tired, half naked boys laid out on the couch. We sure did have a good time, though!

Moms

I read this on a blog today and I just really needed it. Hope it blesses you.

Invisible Mother.....

It all began to make sense, the blank stares, the lack of response, the way one of the kids will walk into the room while I'm on the phone and ask to be taken to the store. Inside I'm thinking, 'Can't you see I'm on the phone?'

Obviously not; no one can see if I'm on the phone, or cooking, or sweeping the floor, or even standing on my head in the corner, because no one can see me at all. I'm invisible.. The invisible Mom. Some days I am only a pair of hands, nothing more! Can you fix this? Can you tie this? Can you open this?

Some days I'm not a pair of hands; I'm not even a human being. I'm a clock to ask, 'What time is it?' I'm a satellite guide to answer, 'What number is the Disney Channel?' I'm a car to order, 'Right around 5:30, please.'

Some days I'm a crystal ball; 'Where's my other sock?, Where's my phone?, What's for dinner?'

I was certain that these were the hands that once held books and the eyes that studied history, music and literature -but now, they had disappeared into the peanut butter, never to be seen again. She's going, she's going, she's gone!?

One night, a group of us were having dinner, celebrating the return of a friend from England. She had just gotten back from a fabulous trip, and she was going on and on about the hotel she stayed in. I was sitting there, looking around at the others all put together so well. It was hard not to compare and feel sorry for myself. I was feeling pretty pathetic, when she turned to me with a beautifully wrapped package, and said, 'I brought you this.' It was a book on the great cathedrals of Europe.

I wasn't exactly sure why she'd given it to me until I read her inscription: 'With admiration for the greatness of what you are building when no one sees.'

In the days ahead I would read - no, devoured - the book. And I would discover what would become for me, four life-changing truths, after which I could pattern my work: 1) No one can say who built the great cathedrals - we have no record of their names. 2) These builders gave their whole lives for a work they would never see finished. 3) They made great sacrifices and expected no credit. 4) The passion of their building was fueled by their faith that the eyes of God saw everything.

A story of legend in the book told of a rich man who came to visit the cathedral while it was being built, and he saw a workman carving a tiny bird on the inside of a beam. He was puzzled and asked the man, 'Why are you spending so much time carving that bird into a beam that will be covered by the roof, No one will ever see it And the workman replied, 'Because God sees.'

I closed the book, feeling the missing piece fall into place. It was almost as if I heard God whispering to me, 'I see you. I see the sacrifices you make every day, even when no one around you does.

No act of kindness you've done, no sequin you've sewn on, no cupcake you've baked, no Cub Scout meeting, no last minute errand is too small for me to notice and smile over. You are building a great cathedral, but you can't see right now what it will become.

I keep the right perspective when I see myself as a great builder. As one of the people who show up at a job that they will never see finished, to work on something that their name will never be on. The writer of the book went so far as to say that no cathedrals could ever be built in our lifetime because there are so few people willing to sacrifice to that degree.

When I really think about it, I don't want my son to tell the friend he's bringing home from college for Thanksgiving, 'My Mom gets up at 4 in the morning and bakes homemade pies, and then she hand bastes a
turkey for 3 hours and presses all the linens for the table.' That would mean I'd built a monument to myself. I just want him to want to come home. And then, if there is anything more to say to his friend, he'd say, 'You're gonna love it there...'

As mothers, we are building great cathedrals. We cannot be seen if we're doing it right. And one day, it is very possible that the world will marvel, not only at what we have built, but at the beauty that has been added to the world by the sacrifices of invisible mothers.

The Will of God will never take you where the Grace of God will not protect you.

To all the wonderful mothers out there!!
May God give you...
For every storm, a rainbow,
For every tear, a smile,
For every care, a promise,
And a blessing in each trial.
For every problem life sends,
A faithful friend to share,
For every sigh, a sweet song,
And an answer for each prayer.

First Sleepover!

Carter Wayne had Peyton over for his first sleepover! We had pizza, rented a movie, played with flashlights, and slept on the floor. They were so sweet and had the best time. Carter Wayne was so excited to finally have one of his friends "sleep at his house"! They went to bed at 10pm and slept till 7:30am, so I have no complaints! I imagine that sleepovers in the future won't involve that much "sleep". :)

Roadsters

We had one semi-warm day (above freezing) and Daddy took the boys out for a spin! Watch out world!

Annalyse Turns One!

Our sweet little buddy Annalyse turned one last week! She had a Winter Wonderland Princess Party and we loved it. I soak up this girl stuff every chance I get! The boys had a blast as always - they love the Silvey house! Happy Birthday, Annalyse! We love you!

Goofy!

Walker has loved this cold weather because he gets to be in the house with his "brothers". Carter Wayne will be watching TV and Walker will come sit by him and CW says"Oh, Walker, I love you too." It is so sweet. Sawyer thinks Walker is the funniest thing. He will just point and laugh when Walker runs through the house. He even says "Walker". Little nuts!

First Big Snow

We finally had our first big snow of 2011. It was like 10 degrees outside and my little kiddos want to eat breakfast in their underwear. Such boys! We went out that morning and walked around the neighborhood. We played in the backyard and it was sooo cold! Carter Wayne even asked to go in. The pictures on the couch are the boys after coming inside. Don't they look pooped!?! Their dad took them out that afternoon and they enjoyed it so much. We needed a do nothing day and we made the most of it!

New Year's Eve

New Year's Eve my parents kept the kids for the weekend! It was so nice. That night we went to the annual Lampkin Party and it was amazing. Ms. Helen cooks food like you wouldn't believe. We were without kids so we were party hopping - we felt so free! We also met up with our friends the Vannamans and get this - went to a 9:50pm movie. I know, wild, right? We even drove by the square and got out. No one was dropping a ball there - but we took some pics anyway. Rodney and I watched movies at home and didn't got to bed till 3am! We slept in the next day and then took down all our Christmas stuff. We cleaned the whole house and rearranged furniture in almost every room. Sunday I slept in and Rodney went to pick up the boys. He hadn't seen them in a week! They ate at Cracker Barrel and CW had to be in his lap and Sawyer made him feed him. They missed their daddy, big time. We had a low key evening getting ready to start back our regular schedules. It was so nice to start the year with a clean slate. Thank goodness God's mercies are new every morning and not just every year! My New Year's Resolution is to stop being late all the time. I hate what it says about me. I know I have two little ones and that makes it hard to get places, but I am often late because I don't want to get up early. The problem is when we are late it stresses me out and I take it out on my family. I don't want the boys to have the memory that their mom was a total meanie in the morning. I am really praying about this resolution and I know God will help me. He cares about even the little things. Happy New Year!

Christmas in Batesville

We had a great Christmas in Batesville!! We got to see lots of family and the boys loved playing with some cousins they hadn't seen in awhile. We were lazy and we ate well. The company was great, too. It really was a fun and relaxing time for our whole family. I am so blessed to have married into a family that loves me like their own - it definitely makes for very special Holidays!
